Islands_3D Animation_2021

As an extension of the New World exhibition, the 3D animation Islands explores the interplay between digital space, abstraction, and shifting perceptions of physicality. This looping animation presents a sequence of fluid, shape-shifting forms—color fields in constant motion, suspended in a state of perpetual transformation.

Emerging from my exploration of Color Field painting and its reduction of form to pure chromatic experience, Islands transposes this painterly logic into a digital, generative environment, where boundaries between the static and the dynamic dissolve. Each frame unfolds like a landscape in flux, a place without fixed coordinates, where color itself dictates spatial relationships. At times, these forms appear as self-contained floating territories, evoking the fragmented maps of an imagined geography. At others, they merge, dissolve, and reconfigure—challenging the idea of defined structure, hinting at the impermanence of borders, both physical and conceptual.

Incorporating elements of speculative world-building, Islands reflects on the shifting nature of reality in an era where virtual environments increasingly shape our spatial awareness. The repetition of movement within the animation—a seemingly infinite cycle of expansion and dissolution—introduces a meditative rhythm, reinforcing the notion that in digital space, forms are never fixed; they exist in a constant state of becoming.

By placing this work in dialogue with the physical paintings of New World, Islands further collapses distinctions between the material and the immaterial, extending the utopian and constructivist impulses of the exhibition into a space that is entirely non-physical yet deeply immersive. The animation functions not as a depiction of a world, but as a world in itself, a territory defined by color, rhythm, and the fluidity of digital existence.
